A conceptual revisiting of one of our earliest production efforts, this was an audition video for the Martha Stewart version of the reality series The Apprentice. This time, however, the contestant, Sarah Brennan, was eventually accepted onto the first (and likely only) season of the show.

Now here was a project I just couldn’t pass up. Having made an Apprentice audition video once before, now — in February of 2005 — I’d have an opportunity to try once again. The project was more of a secret than the last time around — the candidate, Sarah Brennan, had already completed the first interview rounds, and at this stage the producers were insisting on absolute confidentiality. Like the last time, it was a quick-turnaround project: I found out about it on Monday, we shot it Tuesday evening and Wednesday, and I had it edited and polished in time to send it out by Friday. At the time, we all thought I’d be able to let the cat out of the bag in a couple of weeks. But that dragged on... and then Sarah took a none-too-mysterious leave of absence in the spring. Which meant I had to keep my yap shut until the official cast announcement in August. I don’t think I’ve kept a secret that long in my life. Sarah didn’t win the competition (which was obviously geared more toward good television than actual business skill), but she certainly held her own, and left with a grace all too rare in the world of reality television.

A special, privately commissioned 40th birthday video, edited together from existing footage and newly produced interviews in the style of a “Behind the Music” piece.

“Behind the Podium” was an “undercover” video produced for a surprise 40th birthday party. It comprises video, pictures and music collected from friends and family around the country, all assembled together to mimic VH1’s Behind the Music. The challenge was piecing together the various stories, home movie footage and pictures into something that encapsulated both the history and humor of his life, but also the spirit and influence he had on those closest to him. Judging from the reaction at the party, I would have to say it was a success, something the family can treasure for years to come.

An audition video for the Donald Trump reality series The Apprentice. The video served its purpose, in that the aspiring contestant was tapped for an in-person interview, but he did not proceed further in the competition.

The Apprentice audition video was a quick piece I did for a coworker, based on an idea I stole outright from one of the original Project Greenlight director’s bio videos. I really liked the notion of taking the single thread of a story and shooting it at several different locations, then editing it together into a single, apparently straightforward narrative. I also wanted to get away from the “vital statistics” notion of a bio video, and go with a story that illustrated the characteristics the competitor wanted to emphasize. The entrant put together the story on his own, we shot it over a couple of hours one afternoon, I edited it over the following weekend, and we sent it in. He was called back for an in-person interview — so from my perspective, the video was a success — but alas, that was where his journey ended.
